Bay I mount for filters, hoods, and close-up lenses. In the 1950s, Yashima Optical of Nagano, Japan (later Yashica) built its reputation on affordable twin lens reflex cameras. In 1957, the company launched the Yashica-Mat, its first premium TLR and its first with a crank advance.
It borrowed key ideas from the German Rolleiflex, including the auto-cocking shutter and folding crank, at a fraction of the price. The earliest examples carried Lumaxar lenses. Within months they were renamed Yashinon, using the same sharp four-element design, made by Tomioka. The Yashica-Mat helped show the world how good Japanese cameras had become. It stayed in production until 1973 and paved the way for the famous Mat-124 and 124G.
